Dominating the rotunda is a giant African bush elephant, a mounted specimen of the largest and most powerful land animal in the modern world. This particular elephant weighed about 8 tons and stood 13 feet, 2 inches at the shoulders.
Colorful banners that mark the locations of exhibit halls here, and on the floor above, hang all around the rotunda.
Guided public walk-in tours are given at 10:30a.m. and 1:30 p.m. seven days a week, September through June. Receivers for a self-guided audio tour of the exhibits are available from the rotunda on the first floor.
