National Museum of American History The National Museum of American History, founded in 1846 as the National Museum of History and Technology (renamed 1980) and is part of the Smithsonian Institution. Exhibits and research fields span a wide range of Americana, from agriculture to astronomy, mining to music, toys to textiles and transportation. The 415,000-volume library includes a huge collection of "trade literature"--industrial catalogs and the like from which artifacts can be identified and traced. The museum's activities include formal college-level education programs, films, tours, lectures, and concerts. In addition to catalogs and guidebooks, the museum publishes monographs and scholarly books.
